How Does Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Work?
Reverse Osmosis water filtration is a process where water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane, leaving unwanted pollutants and contaminants behind. A Reverse Osmosis unit will provide you with clear, clean, fresh drinking water. The process uses no chemicals or electricity. It's the most effective technology known for the improvement of drinking water.  The reverse osmosis filter membrane pores ranges from 0.0005 to 0.0000002 microns (um).  Therefore, contaminants larger than the membrane size will be rejected.  Since the membrane pore is close to water molecular structure, you will get almost pure water.

Reverse Osmosis = RO
The short form for reverse osmosis is "RO".  Many people say "RO Systems", "RO Filters" or "RO units" and they all refer to the same thing.

Why is Reverse Osmosis Filter Popular?
Reverse osmosis systems is the most effective and most economical system for removing contaminants from the tap water.  Once it is installed, your operating cost can be less than a $100/year, and it will provide all the clean water for cooking, drinking and washing salad.

500 Contaminants in Tap Water: A shocking Discovery
Drinking tap water is like pouring chemicals and other contaminants into our body. It is like smoking which will not kill us immediately, but we know it is very detrimental to our health and irreversible.  Children are more vulnerable then adults since they are growing and have a smaller body mass. The common one or two stage carbon filters can not protect you from this list of contaminants outlined by the government.  Only a reverse osmosis system can give you the most protection at a reasonable cost.

The Environment Protection Agency compose a list of contaminants in drinking water that are health hazardous.  When it comes to water pollution, the tap water in Canada is not that much better than that in the US.

Drinking Water Contaminants List: Shocking!

It is no longer the question of what is in our tap water, it is now a question of what can we do to protect our family's drinking water.

3 Decades
Reverse osmosis filters have been around for more than 3 decades, and the popularity for it is tremendous in the past 5 years because there has been many reports on drinking water contaminations and public health advisor telling people to pre-filter their drinking water.

Reverse Osmosis System VS. Whole House Filter
A Whole House Systems will likely remove less than 20% of contaminants in tap water.
Reverse osmosis systems can remove up to 99.9% of contaminants.
They are different technologies for two different usages. One of the biggest misunderstandings in the market today is consumer thinking that a whole house filter system is designed for drinking water. It is not!

Selecting the Better Reverse Osmosis System
There are many systems in the market.  Here are some features that is very important:
1) Certification.  Does the system have the "Gold Seal" and "NSF" label on the system
2) Stages.  5 stages is better and 4 stages.  4 stages is better than 3 stages
3) Stainless steel tank is better than plastic tank.  Standard size is 4 Gallon Tank
4) Water pressure: 3/8" line is better than 1/4" line
5) If you are installing the system yourself, then you will want a unit that is preassembled.
6) Capacity: Some units are rated for 25, 35, and 50 gallons per day.

Why is Gold Seal Certification Important?

There are many reverse osmosis systems on the market. How do you know that the material used is safe for drinking water? How do you know whether the system is reliable? How do you know whether the filtering mechanism works as it claims? These are critical questions when dealing with your family’s drinking water. You can rest assured when your system is labelled with the GOLD SEAL certification. It is very difficult for water purification systems to be certified because the process is very expensive and the systems need to pass many strict tests by third party companies.

GOLD SEAL Label "Must" be On System

The Gold Seal means the system has been tested and certified by the Water Quality Association for performance, reliability.

Gold Seal Product Certification Program - Why is it important?
To help consumers choose quality water treatment products, WQA developed its Gold Seal Certification Program — issuing the first Gold Seal in 1959.

WQA only awards the Gold Seal to those systems, components, and additives that meet or exceed industry standards for contaminant reduction, structural integrity, and material safety. Customers can easily identify WQA Certified products by looking for the Gold Seal Mark.

Buyers Beware
Many companies label their systems as "Tested and Certified to NSF/ANSI 58".
Be very careful, it is VERY different from "Tested and Certified
By WQA to NSF/ANSI 58"

“Whole SYSTEM” certified BY WQA
Learn the difference between these statements:
a) System is built using all NSF or partial NSF components.  This means the components are certified for safe usage, but there is no certification to indicate that the system will properly.

b)
Tested and Certified "to" NSF. This means any company can test their own product and claim it meets NSF standards.
c)
Tested and Certified "by" WQA. This is the highest certification and offers you the only real protection. Probably, fewer than 1% of the drinking water systems in the world are "whole system" certified by WQA. When it comes to your family's drinking water, don't take any chances.

Contaminant Removal List
Below is a list of contaminants that a reverse osmosis can remove.  Since NSF and WQA do not provide any certified detail list, therefore, there is no guarantee that this list applies to any particular reverse osmosis brands or units.  If you are concern about certain specific contaminants in your water, you should always have your water tested after the reverse osmosis.

Typical Reverse Osmosis Filter Installation

Typical installation is under the sink.  The unit is not that big and these system is built to fit under the sink.  There is an option to put the system in the basement shall you really wanted to.  If that is the case, you need a good system with good pressure.

Compact Size
Fit under any sink or in the basement. Water tank is only the size of a basket ball, and the main unit width is a length of a 350ml Coke can. The main unit can be hung on its side to the wall.

Hook-Up To Refrigerator Free
"T"-splitter can be used to supply water to your fridge. Saves you money on fridge filters.

Pre-Assembled Units
If you are going to install the system yourself, then make sure that you get a pre-assembled unit.  Don't try to buy an unassembled unit to save a few bucks because it is very difficult and requires some knowledge and expertise.  When the system is already assembled, all you need is a drill and to hook up 3 lines.  One line to the faucet, one to the drain and one to the cold water pipe.  No plumbing needed.   Installation Diagram

3 Stages vs. 4 Stages vs. 5 Stages
If you have the budget, it is better to get a 5 stage reverse osmosis unit.  The three stages unit is the most basic with a sediment, carbon and the membrane.  The 4 stage system has an extra polishing filter for removing odours before consumption.  The 5 stage system has an extra polishing filter and an extra carbon.  The extra carbon is for better chemical removal which is very important.

Coffee, Tea, Cocktail Drinks and Cooking With Reverse Osmosis Filtered Water

Coffee and tea lovers, this is your dream.  RO-Pure pure water system gives you absolutely the best water for putting together you favourite drink.  It enhances the natural flavours of the coffee or the tea.  Water from your tap and other low grade filter contains chemicals, TDS, particles, and smells which will mask the natural flavours.

Now you know why high end restaurants makes the drink so good.  The biggest reason is the quality of the water.  A simple test, once you have this system, compare a cup of tea make with tap water vs. RO-Pure pure water and invite you friends over to have a look.

Good-bye to Costly Bottled Water
Install a good quality reverse osmosis system and you can say good-bye to your bottled water for two reasons.
1) A jug of bottled water is about 20 lbs, it is an accident asking to happen.  Why take a chance for you or your loved one to hurt the back trying to left 20 lbs from the grocery store to the car, up the stairs, and put on top of a water cooler?  Don't do it, back injury is one of the most serious and takes many years to heal 90%.  Just for this one reason, a water system is worth it weight in gold to have in your kitchen.  Do you agree?

2) Delivered bottled water is about $7.99 per jug, that is expensive.  For a family of four and to use all the water for cooking and drinking, it will take minimum 3 jug per week.  That will cost  $7.99/jug * 3 jugs * 54 weeks  = $1294/year.  A RO-Pure water system only cost $100/year to operate and your family gets unlimited pure drinking water.   That is $1194 SAVING / year.

How Much Does it Cost?  $0.25 / Day
Lets count pennies.  A person needs 7 glasses of water a day to be healthy.  Unless you are drinking tap water or cooking with tap water, you will be drinking a combination of soft drink, juices, beverages, or buy bottled water.... the average cost is $0.35 / glass.

Cost per person each day is $0.35 * 7 = $2.45 / day
Cost per person each year is $2.45 *365 = $894 / year
Average cost per family of 4 is $894 * 4  = $3577 / year

Now with Reverse osmosis water system, your entire family can get unlimited pure drinking water right in your home for cooking, drinking, coffee, ice, and enough water for your expensive aquarium.  All this for only 25 Cents per day, and $100/year.   That is $2477 SAVING / year.

This is what we call great return on your investment and health. 25 Cents/day...less than the cost for a cup of coffee...
